DERBY-SHELTON ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS

New Scholarship Awarded  for 2011

Dr. Edward Bednar

The Derby/Shelton Rotary Club and the family of the late Dr. Edward Bednar were pleased to announce the addition of the ninth Rotary Scholarship in honor of Dr. Bednar. He was a long time member of the club and very active in supporting its mission. He served as President of the Club during the 1970-1971 Rotary year.

Dr. Bednar's scholarship in the amount of $1,750 will be available to a graduating student at either Derby or Shelton High School with a preference to a student pursuing an education in the health care field. The award was given for the first time in 2011.

Samantha Heins (third from left) is pictured with Rotary President Shawn Fields, Peggy Bednar, Terri Murphy, Lorraine Sarafian and Maria Courtney after being presented with the first Dr. Edward Bednar Scholarship on January 5, 2012.

Dr. Bednar was particularly interested in Rotary's student exchange programs, and his daughters all participated in the program. Dr. Bendnar's wife Peggy and three of his daughters were on hand to present the very first award to Samanta Heings.

The Derby/Shelton Rotary Club annually distributes over $14,250 in the form of nine scholarships to worthy students in Derby and Shelton High School. Funds for this worthwhile project are derived from an endowment fund built through the club's annual fund raising auction. There are three scholarships reserved for students in Derby and Shelton High Schools respectively and three others which may be awarded to a student from either school. Scholarship applications are made available from the Guidance Departments at the respective schools early in the year.
