The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club is pleased to announce the winners of its annual scholarship program for Derby and Shelton High School students. Scholarship Committee Chair Ed Sheehy announced the awards at the weekly club meeting on May 28 at the Brownson Country Club. All of the winning students were in attendance along with their proud parents and administrators from both schools. Watch for more pictures later.

Each of the awardees gave a quick update at the meeting highlighting their experiences and the colleges they will be attending next year.

The members of the committee in addition to Ed Sheehy were Rotarians Rosemary Allen, Pat Carey, Lucy Andrade, and Kim Caro as well as administrators Jen Moffet of Derby High School and Lisa Sapienza Girard of Shelton High School.,

2024 Scholarship Winners

It’s time for students at Derby and Shelton High Schools to submit their applications for the Rotary Club’s annual scholarship program. Applications are available through the guidance departments at the schools.

At its weekly meeting on June 8, The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club announced the winners of its 2003 scholarships to students from Derby and Shelton High Schools. Over $22,000 in awards were made.

This year’s winners are:

Ed Sheehy once again chaired the Scholarship Committee and other members of the committee included Pat Carey, Lucy Andrade, Julie Blakeman, Rosemary Allen, and Lynda Reid. Since 2000, the Club has awarded over $370,000 in scholarship support to the students from the two schools.

The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club recognized seven outstanding students from Derby and Shelton High Schools with scholarships at a luncheon held at Wellington’s Restaurant in Shelton on June 2. Scholarship Committee Chairman Ed Sheehy and Club President Julie Blakeman handled the brief presentation with each student presenting some brief remarks including their future school plans.

In addition to the tremendous work that the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club does here in Derby and Shelton, the club is part of Rotary International’s good works around the world. The Rotary Foundation is currently offering 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders from around the world to study at a Rotary Peace Center. There are 50 fellowships available for Master’s Degree participants. Those accepted candidates study peace and development issues with research-informed teaching and a diverse student body. The programs last 15 to 24 months and include a two- to three-month field study, which participants design themselves. There are an additional 80 fellowships designed for working professionals. During the one-year blended learning program, experienced peace and development professionals with diverse backgrounds gain practical skills to promote peace within their communities and across the globe. Fellows complete field studies, and they also design and carry out a social change initiative.

Since the program began in 2002, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,400 fellows who now work in more than 115 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments, NGOs, the military, education, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank.

Applications for the 2022-23 Program are now being accepted until May 15. Applications are reviewed by the local Rotary District which must endorse the application and submit it to Rotary by July 1.

President’s Scholarship ($1.000) – Jake Oddo – Shelton High School

Derby-Shelton Rotary is pleased to announce the winners of its 2019 scholarship program for students from Derby and Shelton High Schools. The Club offers a wide variety of scholarships highlighted by this year’s Chromik/Turaj Scholarship to Derby’s Angelica Sampson and the Tierney/Fowler Scholarship to Shelton’s Andrew Connelly. Their scholarships are for $8,000 paid over their four years in college. Sampson will be attending Sacred Heart University and Connelly will be going to Ohio University.

Xavier Ibrahim was Derby’s Presidental Scholar winner for $1,000 and will attend American University. Zachary Kozlowski won the award at Shelton High School and will attend UMASS-Amherst.

There were three $1,500 scholarships. Ambarlyn Angeletti of Derby received the Handi Scholarship and will be attending CCSU. Logan Flanigan of Derby will be receiving the Deceased Rotarians Scholarship and will be going to SCSU. Stephanie Schofield of Shelton is going to UCONN and has received the Dickgiesser Scholarship.
